The first element of the Thrive Together program is to help orphans, vulernable children, and caregivers to have a healthy life.

the Dera water project

Pictured above is a glimpse of the foremost problem vexing Dera, Ethiopia. Villagers stand in line for days only to receive a few gallons of water. Imagine not knowing when or for how long the water will flow. Imagine not being able to leave your place in line or risk being passed up. Imagine being in line in the middle of the night with hyenas prowling around.

This is no imaginary situation. This is reality for the people of Dera; a cycle of scarcity that can't be broken without help.

Building a fresh water distribution infrastructure, with pipelines and pumping stations, is the planned solution for regions like Dera. This project requires Hope Arising to contribute $250,000 USD. Partnering with World Bank and the Ethiopian government, Hope Arising is the final critical piece in securing clean water.

Your generosity is needed to help reach our goal. Please consider one of these donation options:

Water for a child

$15 per month sponsors water for a single child in need

Family-to-family

$105 from your family each month provides water for a family in Dera

One time gift

Donations in all amounts are needed, large or small

with water, life begins

Once water supplies are secure, Hope Arising initiates the Thrive Together program for orphans and vulnerable children. Community issues of housing and food security are addressed first. Native staff train and mobilize community leaders, who in turn engage the most vulnerable village members. Groups are established to support households and move them toward the desired positive outcomes.

Housing outcomes, for each home:
— permanent structure
— roof with no leaks
— bath bucket
— animal coop
— rubbish pit
— shelf for pots and utensils
— no stagnant water
— clean yard
Food security outcomes:
— at least 2 nourishing meals a day
— a garden
— no signs of malnutrition
