Disease, general living conditions, war and HIV/AIDS threaten to destroy the traditional family structure throughout Ethiopia. Children often forego education and lose hope for a better future in order to provide immediate care for younger siblings. If cared for by extended family, those children often strain limited resources and end up in servitude to the caregiving family. Children whose parents die from HIV/AIDS are frequently stigmatized and ostracized because of simple ignorance and fear.
Hope Arising, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 2007.

As a sustainable organization, Hope Arising strengthens families in an effort to help them escape extreme poverty and achieve self-sustainability. Abenezer earned a B.A. Degree in sociology and social work from Jimma University and is currently working toward a Master of Social Work at Addis Ababa University. Abenezer was born and raised in Asella, which lies south of Addis Ababa. Abenezer’s experience includes working for international NGOs and Ministerial Government offices with the goal of improving the lives of orphans and vulnerable children and strengthening the community at large.

Chantal Carr, MNpS
Executive Director, Co-Founder and Board Member
Before co-founding Hope Arising, Chantal served as president and a board member of a non-profit working with orphans in Mozambique. She is experienced in grant-writing and program evaluation. Chantal earned a Master in Non-Profit Studies at Arizona State University. Chantal, a mother of four children, enjoys waterskiing and basketball. She became interested in helping women and orphans after the loss of two infant daughters. In 2014, Brigham Young University honored Chantal with its Distinguished Service Award for her work in Ethiopia.
Associate Executive Director and Co-Founder
Betty, as she is known to friends, brings professional skill and passion to initiate opportunities for service in Dera. She has managed several small businesses and worked as a translator. Betty earned a degree in information systems from St Mary University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Betty and her husband, Woudneh, are parents of two sons and two daughters and they have a passion for helping children and women. Prior to migrating to the United States, Betty served as Hope Arising’s founding Country Director in Ethiopia.
Travel Team Advisor
Jen embraces a passion for travel and learning about other cultures. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from Brigham Young University. She and her husband, Dr. Brian Dille, are raising four children. Jen previously taught a range of subjects from math to English as a second language to music. In addition to her work with Hope Arising, Jen volunteers in her children’s’ schools and for her church. Jen has served throughout her life and is thrilled to be involved with Hope Arising and serving the people in Dera.
Jennette, a professional photographer, is actively involved in fighting for the empowerment of women in their roles as mothers and wives. She advocates for the protection of the family and the elevation of women at United Nations and other international conferences.
Jennette loves the outdoors and when not involved with humanitarian work you will likely find her running, hiking the trails of Arizona, or playing basketball. She is the mother of five children.
Joe Shurtz is a principal with Sure Spark Marketing, a modern marketing agency located in Arizona. Over his career, Joe has consulted with several Fortune 500 companies as well as countless local, small businesses. An award-winning designer, his work has been featured in national campaigns. Joe has been actively involved with Hope Arising and continues to provide the organization with valuable marketing guidance and general strategic counsel.

Dr. Jon Wilson, OD
Dr. Jon Wilson graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor’s degree in Biology. Jon obtained his Doctor of Optometry and Masters in Education, Visual Function in Learning from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. He completed an internship at the Eye Institute of Utah, specializing in LASIK and cataract care with an added emphasis on ocular disease.
Jon loves serving humanitarian eye care missions and currently is the director of the Hope Arising Eye Clinic in Dera, Ethiopia. He joined Roosevelt Vision Clinic in 2001 and spends his spare time with his wife Heather and five children pursuing snowboarding, traveling, antique cars, a good parade, and anything outdoors.
Dr. Chet Jenkins, DDS
Dr. Chet Jenkins is happily married to his high school sweetheart, Jennette, and together they have five children. A University of Utah alumnus, Chet attended the Ohio State University School of Dentistry, where he graduated top of his class. He remains a loyal and often over-enthusiastic Buckeyes fan. Active in his church, Chet keeps busy and loves working with the youth when he isn’t getting in a little golf. Chet is founder and CEO of Signature Dental Partners, which operates dental clinics throughout the western United States, and also volunteers at the Non-profit Neighborhood Christian Clinic in downtown Phoenix. Since 2008, Chet and his family have dedicated themselves to helping Hope Arising and the people of Ethiopia. They have been able to provide dental services, supplies, and general education to the people of Dera. He feels fortunate to be involved with this fine group of people and loves those he serves. In 2015, Chet and his wife received the Crown Council’s Frances Hammond Humanitarian Award for their work establishing dental care in Ethiopia.
Reed Carr, MIM, MBA
Chief Financial Officer and Board Member
Reed is CFO and operations manager at ARCUS Private Capital Solutions, a private equity firm based in Arizona. As an entrepreneur, he previously co-founded TrueFactor and continues to operate Sandstone Ventures. Previously he managed operations and supply chain organizations at Intel Corporation. He earned a Master of International Management from Thunderbird School of Global Management and a Master of Business Administration from Arizona State University. Reed serves as president of the Gilbert Unified School District governing board, volunteers with the youth of his church, coached youth sports, and enjoys traveling. He and his wife are parents of 4 children.
Marianne fell in love with the people of Dera, Ethiopia on her first visit and has returned several times. Marianne is from Stirling, Alberta and works for a Toronto-based exploration company on a project in northern British Columbia, near the Alaska border. She has two boys, loves to travel, and enjoys an active lifestyle that includes running, hockey, and wake-boarding.
