When Hope Arising arrived to Dera, Ethiopia, 12 years ago, we learned that clean, reliable drinking water to be the principal problem. The community now has water, but their path of progression to self reliance still requires some assistance.
We implemented a zero-interest micro loan program and now more than 70 women have completed training and operate their own business. As these women progressed, they indicated their inability to read or write prevents them from effective learning, as they cannot take notes during training, and holds back their business progress, as they cannot maintain adequate record of their income and expenses.
To address their needs, Hope Arising partnered with two other non-profits/NGOs, Interweave Solutions and Canadian Humanitarian, to develop basic literacy manuals.
As part of the process, we met with groups of Ethiopian women and asked them their stories and needs. Many of the participants, expressed that it was the first time in their lives anyone genuinely listened to their needs or took interest in their lives. Invited Education and government officials, who expected to observe only an hour or two, remained and listened over the multiple day sessions.
The resulting stories—both culturally sensitive and relevant— serve as the text of learning. The beautiful artwork was provided by an orphaned young woman.
We excited to announce that the manuals are complete and printed. In the coming weeks, we will launch our first literacy program focused on helping adult women. This literacy program will change many people’s lives. Once we prove its success, we hope to partner with government education officials to serve women throughout Ethiopia.
